How to Dress for Yoga
Introduction
Although you can easily find specialized yoga clothes, there really is no dress code for yoga. Whether you are practicing solo at home or with a class, you should dress comfortably in clothes that do not hinder your yoga poses. Read on to learn how to dress for yoga.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Step One
Dress in comfortable clothes that do not bind or restrict you. Materials and pieces of clothing, like jeans, that do not stretch will always restrict you in some way. Also, make sure your clothes fit properly, so that they are not too tight.
Step Two
Select cotton clothing for proper ventilation. Since cotton breathes easily, your body will remain cooler during your yoga workout. Cotton is also absorbent, which will keep the sweat off your body doing your practice.
Step Three
Choose close fitting tops and bottoms. Usually people choose a tank top and shorts. Since you will be inverted, you want snug fitting clothes that will not get in your way or reveal parts of your body that you would rather stay hidden.
Step Four
Pick your clothes based on what type of yoga you will be doing. A tracksuit or sweatpants are perfect for light yoga in an air conditioned room. However, Bikram yoga (yoga in a heated room) requires that you dress in lighter tops and shorts.
Step Five
Wear clothes that relax you. Since a large part of yoga is about relaxing your body and mind, your clothes should further this practice. Dress in whatever you feel comfortable wearing in public and that you you find yourself attractive in.
Step Six
Leave the shoes at home. Since yoga is practiced barefoot, you do not need to worry about shoes. Many people choose to attend yoga classes in flip flops or sandals, which can be easily removed before class.
Step Seven
Consider wearing a sweatshirt or track jacket when you do yoga if you get cold easily. Air conditioned rooms can be quite cold, especially in winter. You can always remove extra layers during class if you begin to feel hot.
Overall Tips & Warnings
You do not need to spend large amounts of money on yoga clothing. Dress in clothes you would normally wear to work out in. Of course, if you want to buy special clothes, then you should. Even that slight splurge might make your yoga more refreshing.
Women tend to favor sports bras for support while practicing yoga. A sports bra also provides excellent coverage in all poses. Most workout tank tops also double as a sports bra.
